Upper Waikani Falls, also known as the Three Bears, is a stunning three-tiered waterfall located on the island of Maui in Hawaii. The falls are situated at an elevation of 1,500 feet and can be easily accessed from Hana Highway near Wailuaiki Beach Park.

Details about Upper Waikani Falls
The falls gets its name from the Hawaiian words “waikani,” which mean “rippling waters” – a perfect description for this cascading trio of waterfalls that plunge into a swimming hole and onwards down Wailua Nui Stream. When you arrive at this natural wonder you’ll first notice the first tier of cascadig waters about 40 feet over a wide ledge. It’s definitely the most photographed part of Upper Waikani Falls.
The next two tiers aren’t anything to scoff at as each one also has a beautiful plunge of 15 or so feet. When you combine all three it is easy to see why so many people enjoy coming here for a few hours to enjoy one of Hawaii’s best waterfalls.
If you are on a time crunch you can catch a glimpse of Upper Waikani Falls from your car at the parking area trailhead. In spring and summer months the parking lot can often be full and the only option is to wait or drive a mile down the road where there is additional parking spots. However, we always recommend you take the time to hike the easy trail up to the base for a truly memorable experience.
If you pass under the bridge on the highway you’ll find the trailhead that goes up to this natural wonder. There are a few parts that are considered challenging due to the moisture and slippery rocks. Take your time exploring this jungle like atmosphere as you’ll witness things such as the red torch ginger, a tree with stems that go 20 feet up into the sky. There are also ferns, croton, and other local plants native to Hawaii. You won’t see many hiking trails that are so vibrant with wilderness and wildlife and may be the favorite part of your trip all together.
Once you reach the bottom section of Waikani Falls, you can immediately jump into the large swimming hole if you like to cool down from your trek. Here is also the best views of all three cascading tiers of waters splashing over the jagged rocks before falling onto your head.
