Umpqua Hot Springs is located in Oregon, US, at a height of 2,640 feet (80 meters). Two geothermal pools and a number of springs run down the region, each with a slightly varying temperature. The pools are oval shaped and a great site for soaking and sunbathing, while taking in the beautiful landscape.
The bigger pool, enclosed by wooden fences, measures 5 feet by 8 feet and has a temperature of 110F or 43C. The smaller pool is at a slightly greater height and measures four feet by five feet. Both pools are around 2.5 feet deep. The average temperature is around 112F or 44C.
The springs are actually a stop on the North Umpqua Trail, which is 709 miles long, and is open for horseback riding, mountain bikers and the general hikers. Dogs are allowed, but they must be leashed. Umpqua Hot Springs are often occupied and heavily crowded. If there is too much snow, then the site may be closed down in winters. Clothing is optional in the area.
General Information
The site is open only during the daytime. Parking fee is around $5 per day for a single vehicle. Payment can be made through cash or recreation passes. Parking is available for around 10 vehicles. The springs can be accessed from Roseburg, Oregon via the Diamond Lake Boulevard and Highway 138.
Umpqua Hot Springs Amenities
A vault toilet is located near the Umpqua Hot Springs. Please take your own drinking water and food. You can only dispose of limited garbage in the area, so do take some bags to bring it back.
Accommodation
Camping is not allowed in the area. If you want to stay overnight, then the Toketee Lake Campground is the nearest option, which provides access to the Hot Springs trail as well as the North Umpqua Trail. The camping ground is located at a distance of around 4 miles from the Umpqua Springs. Beautiful wildlife can be found near the campground, including otters, beavers, kingfishers, geese, ducks and bald eagles. The wildlife you see depends on what time of the year you visit the springs.
There are 33 campsites, with 15 of them by reservation only. The remaining are available on first come-first served basis. Each campsite has fire pits and picnic tables. Like in the hot springs areas, no drinking water is available here as well. Two vault toilets have been set up in the area.
Camping fee is $10. If you take an extra vehicle, you’ll have to pay an additional $5.
What Else Should You Know
• Please follow the carry-in, carry-it rule; bring back whatever you take with you.
• The springs are located 0.3 miles away from the parking lot. Proper shoes are required for this short trail.
• The area is often rainy and wet, so keep valuable items in a waterproof bag.
