Just north of Katherine, Australia, Tjuwaliyn Douglas Hot Springs draws in crowds from all over the world. This is one of the true natural thermal pools located within the park and is protected by the Douglas River. Feel free to go up or downstream to try the various degrees of pools and pick the one that is just right for you.
The park is located directly on the lands of the Wagiman tribe and several sections are considered sacred. We recommend you stick as close to the river as possible and enjoy the park wildlife and scenery as you relax and rejuvenate. You’ll see quite the eclectic group of birds including bandicoots and flying foxes.
If you plan on visiting Tjuwaliyn (Douglas) Hot Springs for a while, there are camping spots you can stay the night in. Some amenities do include fire pits, toilets, a picnic area, and water. The road isn’t fully paved all the way to the natural thermal springs so make sure you have a vehicle that can handle dirt and gravel. For the pools themselves, we highly recommend you test the water each time you get in as there are sections that can get very hot. As you go up or downstream you can enjoy some much cooler sections and are safe for kids. The best time to visit Douglas hot springs is during the dryer seasons (May through September). Other months do bring in heavy rains and can cause road closures.
Because the park is jointly owned by the Aboriginal and Wagiman people, there can be random times the park closes for women ceremonies. They do ask that you respect their culture and in some rare cases men may be prohibited.
Directions:
Travel south (if driving from Darwin) or north (if driving from Katherine) on Stuart Highway. From there take Dorat and then Oolloo roads and follow the signs for the park.
