Alberta is one of the best cities in Canada for camping. As you travel through the area you will most likely stumble upon the national park called Banff. Here is where you can get away from the hustle and bustle of every day life and just enjoy mother nature as intended. If you plan on camping there are hundreds of great campsites to try out. One such campground is Castle Mountain.
The campground itself is a little more primitive than most an suitable for those looking to get into some backcountry. All said and done there are 43 campsites in a circular loop and nestles in some beautiful forest area. As you set up your tent you can enjoy a nice stream that runs along the site and puts you to sleep with it’s gentle sounds.

Facilities are a little limited at Castle Mountain in Alberta. Outside of a fire pit for warmth and a toilet to do your business, you are pretty much on your own. Just a few minutes away there is a gas station and local convenience store if you need to pick something up, but just be prepared to enjoy nature as intended. RV’s are also permitted at Castle Mountain Campground. They don’t have huge lots so having a smaller RV is best suited (24 feet in length – 7 meters) 6 people and 2 cars are allowed at each campsite and all camping needs to be done within the gravel areas permitted.
Banff National Park Activities
There are many things to do in the National Park while you are visiting Alberta. With a 9,000 foot mountain right next to the campgrounds, you can enjoy some amazing hiking trails that wind in and around the area. There are some full day hikes that will take you to Johnston Canyon for picture taking views, or shorter hikes that still give you access to wildlife an even waterfalls. Many hikers prefer coming to Castle Mountain to get an early start on mountain climbing and getting to the peak as quick as possible. Camping is first come first serve so try and get there at a reasonable hour to get a spot.
Outside of hiking there are also places to fish, bike, or hot springs to soak in. Take full advantage while you explore Canada and try to do all the activities possible.
Castle Mountain Camping Prices
It is $21.50 to stay the night at this campground or $30 if you want to have a fire at night. The additional $8 does provide wood for you so you don’t have to go chop down any trees.
