The springs are situated at an altitude of approximately 7,000 feet and have been used by humans since ancient times. The Black Rock Hot Springs consist of two large pools that measure around 25 feet across each, as well as several smaller ones nearby. These pools contain water that has been naturally heated up to temperatures between 95 and 110 degrees Fahrenheit.
Although it can get quite hot during summer months, visitors will find the waters very soothing due to its high mineral content which includes sodium bicarbonate, calcium sulfate (Epsom salt), potassium chloride and magnesium sulfate among others. Visitors should note that these minerals may cause skin irritation if exposed to for too long so it is recommended not to stay longer than 15-20 minutes per session when soaking in the waters.
Visiting Black Rock Hot Springs offers many opportunities for relaxation and recreation including camping, hiking trails leading into the surrounding mountainside wilderness areas as well as fishing spots along nearby rivers or streams such as San Francisco River or Catwalk Creek respectively. There are two different primitive natural pools to enjoy at Black Rock Hot Springs. The bigger tub is the hottest at about 100 degrees depending on the season and water flow from the Rio Grande. It’s basically made from rocking off a section of the river so the bottom is purely mud which feels great on the feet. The second pool is slightly smaller and hovers around 98 degrees. Both are right on the river where you can here the wave, giving a very tranquil experience.
Directions to Black Rock Hot Springs
From Taos, New Mexico
1. Start on NM-522 North towards El Prado (10 miles)
2. Merge onto Acequia Madre del Llano Road until you reach CO Road B-007 (3 miles)
3. You will cross two bridges until you start up a hill and find parking for the hot springs.
4. It’s an easy hike down to your destination.
