Arethusa Falls is a spectacular waterfall located in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. It is one of the highest waterfalls in the state, with a drop of over 140 feet. The primary feature of Arethusa Falls is its impressive height as it stands at an astounding 140 feet making it one of the highest waterfalls in all of New England! The main drop consists of two tiers with several smaller cascades scattered along them leading up to the base where it meets Bemis Brook and flows downstream towards Crawford Notch State Park.
The falls are named after Arethusa, an ocean nymph who was turned into a spring by Artemis to avoid being pursued by Alpheus, a river god. This mythological story inspired Nathaniel Hawthorne to write “The Waterfall” which tells how two lovers were separated forever when they were transformed into cascading waters at this very spot.
Arethusa Falls can be accessed via several trails that lead up to the top or bottom of the falls depending on your preference for hiking difficulty. From either direction you will be rewarded with breathtaking views along the way as well as at your destination once you reach Arethusa Falls itself. On clear days there are even rainbows that can be seen arching through misty spray from atop these roaring waters! The best way to experience Arethusa Falls is by taking a hike through Crawford Notch State Park or nearby trails such as Mt Willard Trail or Ethan Pond Trail. All three offer stunning views over this magnificent natural wonder while providing access directly to it via bridge crossings or steep climbs depending on your route choice. Hiking Trail at Arethusa Falls
The hike to Arethusa Falls is a moderate 3 mile roundtrip trek, beginning at the parking area just off Route 302 near Willey House Station. The trail begins as a wide path that takes hikers through woods with plenty of flora and fauna to observe along the way. After about a half-mile, you will come across an old stone bridge which leads to several sections of more rugged terrain including steep inclines, some slippery rocks and roots scattered throughout for added challenge.
As you ascend higher up into the mountainside, you will be treated to stunning panoramic views overlooking Crawford Notch State Park before arriving at your destination: Arethusa Falls! At 140 feet high, this majestic waterfall cascades down over granite cliffs and boulders providing an awe-inspiring sight amidst its natural surroundings. To get closer to the falls themselves, there are two viewing platforms located on either side offering great photo opportunities.

To get to Arethusa Falls from downtown North Conway, New Hampshire: Map
1. Head north on Route 16/302 towards Bartlett.
2. Turn left onto NH-16 N/US-302 W and drive for about 9 miles until you reach NH-112 E/Crawford Notch Road.
3. Turn right onto NH-112 E/Crawford Notch Road and follow it for about 8 miles until you reach Willey House Station Visitor Center on your left side (you will pass by several parking areas along this road).
4. Park at Willey House Station Visitor Center and follow the Arethusa Falls Trail (a 1 mile trail) which starts behind the visitor center building to reach Arethusa Falls lookout point.
